Inspired by Pointillism, these works are meticulously demanding. Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form an image. Here, Unni Shankar has used
black ink instead of colours.

The strange anachronism of Unni Shankar’s paintings and drawings invokes an arcadian nostalgia for a primal paradise. In a style that is heavily reminiscential of Art Nouveau, the pictures articulate a romantic ecology in which an oneiric flora not only canopies libidinal encounters, but also intertwines with the bodies in a passionate embrace. The slender, languishing anatomies of denizens of this primordial ecology, however, sublimate the erotics onto a vague mystical reverie slumbering within the gossamer folds of a lyrical unconscious.
