Vernissage and David Hall gave a send-off party to the Russian artists Mr.Soloviov, Mr. Sattarov, Ms. Daria and  Mr. Chepik.       The atmosphere was fabulous.
Later during the day Partners of Vernissage, Mrs. Ambily Binu and Mr. Devadattan Nair (Dattan Nair) gave away the Certificate of Participation to the artists.

A Sojourn to Russia

KOCHI: The age-old ties between Russia and India grow stronger in the artistic sphere as well with works of many Russian artists on display at the David Hall, Fort Kochi, taking you into the corridors of Russia.

Awesome are the works of 12 artists - Geraskeevich Valery, Soloviov Anatoli, Sattarov Mansoor, Demko Adolf, Kostamonova Evgeny, Ratkin Vladimor, Mirek Alexei, Elena, Geraskeevich Prlina, Anthonova Daria and Chepik Daniel. Amid them are the works of students (below 14) of the Serov School of Arts in Moscow, one of the oldest art institutes in Russia.

Get to know the culture, social life, politics, architecture, myths and legends of the vast land. The figurative and narrative works enlighten you on the Land of the Tsars. Many a moment typical of Russia has been captured. Soloviov Anatoli, who does conceptualised figurative work, gives you a peek into the revelry of the people. The drinks and accordion ring with their music and spirit. “This is a slice of Russian life,” says Anatoli.

The piece takes you into the deeper levels of life. Anatoli uses a few Russian words that warn about the harmful effects of liquor and many numerals that are left to the viewers to interpret. In another frame, people unwind on a merry- go-round, seated on different animal forms, their expression and emotions quite care free. The rhythm and music of the river Volga are brought out in detail by Sattarav Mansoor. It looks real and full of life. “I admire Gandhiji. He’s another Leo Tolstoy for us. In 1998 I gifted a portrait of Gandhi to the Indian Embassy and I just felt like doing one for this show,” says Mansoor who feels one with Gandhi. Mansoor has captured the character and feeling of the people whom he has profiled, many being his family members.

Russian landscapes in vibrant hues and serene shades of snow-clad trees and houses have a life of their own in Daniel’s works with a touch of Van Gogh in them. His narrative piece is mindboggling.

The soul of heritage buildings can be seen in Daria’s works. Sans human figures, they speak a lot about life. Her colours are unique and bear a distinct style. The stunning works of other artists also show you some facets of Russia.

The frames of the students are interesting. People near Saint Basil’s cathedral on the Red Square, battle scenes with minute details, people relaxing at a cafe and Moscow in the seventh century are captivating. In one frame a young woman floats a floral wreath with candles on them hoping that her man would find it. Many myths, legends and fantasies move you.

The exhibition ‘Zarya’ organised by Vernissage Art Gallery in association with Kerala Lalitha Kala Akademi to celebrate ‘Russian Art Week’ will run through March 14.

Chepik Daniel is a young artist from Moscow. He was there at the David Hall on 27th February and 1st March. He illustrated few scenes around the beautiful David Hall's Cafe. He got nice reviews for illustrating Mr. Johny Paul,the Manager of David Hall.

ZARYA, the painting exhibition by Russian artists at the David Hall, Fort Cochin was inaugurated by Mr.Rossovski, Director Russian Cultural Centre, New Delhi on 27th February 2010 at 7 pm. Worshipful Mayor Mrs. Mercy Williams was the Chief Guest..

Eminent Russian artists Mr.Soloviov Anatoli and Mr. Sattarov Mansoor were present during the occasion.

`ZARYA’, Exhibition of Paintings by Russian Artists

Vernissage \ver-ni-säzh\ Art Gallery, Cochin in association with Kerala Lalithakala Akademi is showcasing paintings by Russian artists at David Hall, Fort Cochin, from 28th February to 14th March, 2010.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by Mr. Rossovski F.A, The Counselor and Director of Russian Cultural Centre, New Delhi on 27th February 2010 at 6 pm. The show continues thereafter daily up to 14th March 2010, between 11 am and 7 pm

This is the first time in Kerala, a painting exhibition of this magnitude is being conducted. It is a new beginning, a dawn of a new cultural endeavor. Indeed, it is aptly titled ‘ZARYA’, the Russian word for dawn or sunrise.

This event also exhibits paintings from Serov School of Arts, one of the oldest art institute in Russia. The renowned artists featured in the exhibitions  includes Mr. Geraskeevich Valery (Director, Serov School of Arts,Moscow ), Mr. Solovieov Anatoli and Mr. Sattarov Mansoor. Works of emerging artists like Ms.  Anthonova Daria and Mr. Chepik Daniel are also being featured. 40 oil paintings in different genres  will be displayed at the David Hall.

Simultaneously there will be a Painting exhibition at The Russian Cultural Centre, Gorky Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram and at Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, Thrissur.

There will be an Art Camp at Thrissur comprising 5 artists from both Russia and India sharing their resourceful experiences. 

Vernissage  Art Gallery is a new initiative which provides an exclusive exhibition space for Russian Artists to showcase their creative talent in India.

Contemporary Russian artists have an increased exposure to current European artistic styles, unlike their counterparts in the early 20th century. The contemporary avant-garde artists have reinterpreted these styles by combining them with their own distinctive innovations thus providing new and exhilarating artistic experiments. The artists we represent range across many genres in contemporary Russian art, including figurative and narrative art, still life, landscape painting, surrealist, realist and portrait paintings. The exhibition is curated by Mody Thomas.

Art Exhibitions will be scheduled every year as ‘The Russian Week’. Cochin will be the hub and eventually the event will move to other major cities in India as well. In future the event will include performing art forms like music, Ballet, dance, opera, and drama.
