“Freedom Road” is an exhibition of photographs being held at Vernissage Art Gallery, Panampilly Nagar, Cochin from 31st October – 10th November 2010 from 10 am to 7 pm.
The exhibition showcases everyday imagery in a thought provoking manner captured by Nihaal Faizal, a young and upcoming photographer. Nihaal is a youngster who took to photography as a hobby and discovered a passion for the camera and the vistas through the viewfinder.
He’s interested in fine arts photography and plans to work with still and motion photography. For a self taught photographer, an avid interest in art, cinema, music, literature fuels and inspires his creativity.
Despite his recent foray into photography and relative youth, the artist displays tremendous sensitivity in capturing the mundane with panache. The objects of his photographs point to the inertia and apathy that has gripped the population and society.
The photographs display a latent beauty despite the lingering brooding quality and obvious decay depicted by its subjects.
The title is inspired by a photograph of a road signage (by the same name) which shares space with the emblem of a political party. It is paradoxical because despite the title, the photographs aim to bring into focus the trapped existence led by animate and inanimate objects in their respective life cycle and the parallelism that exists between the two.
The young artist is well on his way to attaining his creative goals and wishes to graduate onto making short films in the near future.
In his own words, “When I put my eye to the viewfinder, I make the infinite, finite. What was whole before becomes a part and then that part viewed separately develops fullness which translates into myriad meanings and interpretations. It is a cyclical process because one idea leads to another photograph and the process continues with the finite and infinite constantly interchanging”.
“Freedom Road” at Vernissage is an unvarnished picture of Kochi city which has captured the creative imagination of this young photographer.
Nihaal will share proceeds from the sale of his artworks with “Crescent Girls Orphanage, Kochi”, an organization for protecting and nurturing young girls without family.
